Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Liane Moriarty comes a novel that looks at marriage, siblings, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest

The Delaney family love one another dearly—it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other 。 。 。

If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?

This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings。

The Delaneys are fixtures in their community。 The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends。 They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable。 But after fifty years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives。 So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?

The four Delaney children—Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke—were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what it took to go all the way。 But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon。

One night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend。 The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs。 If only that was all she wanted。

Later, when Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan。 But for someone who claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide。 Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure—but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light。

It pains me to say that I didn't enjoy it。 I DID like the tennis bits。 I DID like the way it was written, to begin with。 Alternating chapters between the lead up to Joy's disappearance through the eyes of each family member and short snippets through the eyes of random secondary characters, like the uber driver and waitress。 BUT, this then got on my nerves when I was starting to get invested and then it was shut down by the random character popping up in the next chapter with too much backstory It pains me to say that I didn't enjoy it。 I DID like the tennis bits。 I DID like the way it was written, to begin with。 Alternating chapters between the lead up to Joy's disappearance through the eyes of each family member and short snippets through the eyes of random secondary characters, like the uber driver and waitress。 BUT, this then got on my nerves when I was starting to get invested and then it was shut down by the random character popping up in the next chapter with too much backstory for no reason。 I didn't warm to any of the characters, either。 By the end, I just wanted Joy to be dead, quite frankly。 Perhaps if it didn't get quite so detailed and go for quite so long? I don't know。 Please form your own opinion, as I have seen plenty of great, high rating reviews for this book already, so it may be the fact that I have read SO many fabulous books lately that this simply didn't cut it at this time。 I have loved so many of Liane's books and she will always be a blind buy author for me, and this has not changed that。 ⭐⭐ 。。。more

Liane Moriarty is a genius。 I’m not sure anyone writes family dynamics as well as she does, maybe Marian Keyes, that’s why they’re both favourites of mine! It pains me to only give this book 2 stars, because I’m usually a fan of Liane Moriarty’s books。 But the first half was so slow and I just wasn’t connecting to any of the characters。 It was hard to pick the book back up to continue to read。 The 2nd half was actually better, but if someone asked me my opinion if this book, I’d say it was just ok, which is why I gave it only 2 stars。

Liane Moriarty once again creates complex, interesting, flawed yet loveable characters and places them in emotional and physical danger, developing intriguing mysteries and surprising twists。 Apples Never Fall is a wonderful novel of family relationships, how we are changed by love, by parental scars and flawed parenting, and by the resilience of families who truly care, even while they are imperfect。

Liane Moriarty is a masterclass in character-focused stories。 Like Big Little Lies, Apples Never Fall is not a plot-heavy story。 Instead, the author delves deeply into the characters, developing backstories so convincing that it’s a shock when their truthfulness is questioned in the present timeline (wherein the police are investigating)。 While I am optimistic and generally give people the benefit of the doubt, I was throughly taken in by Moriarty’s characters, unsure of who to trust and what wa Liane Moriarty is a masterclass in character-focused stories。 Like Big Little Lies, Apples Never Fall is not a plot-heavy story。 Instead, the author delves deeply into the characters, developing backstories so convincing that it’s a shock when their truthfulness is questioned in the present timeline (wherein the police are investigating)。 While I am optimistic and generally give people the benefit of the doubt, I was throughly taken in by Moriarty’s characters, unsure of who to trust and what was reliable, alternating between distrust and belief in each of the characters。 。。。more

This book was an interesting examination of family dynamics。 That was definitely the most intriguing part of the story, learning what happened in the past to shape present events/attitudes/decisions。 I loved the way Liane Moriarty slowly revealed each piece of the puzzle, jumping between past and present, between different perspectives to paint the full picture。 The only issue, I feel like the end of the book was both abrupt (the tone seemed to completely shift when it jumped into the pandemic) This book was an interesting examination of family dynamics。 That was definitely the most intriguing part of the story, learning what happened in the past to shape present events/attitudes/decisions。 I loved the way Liane Moriarty slowly revealed each piece of the puzzle, jumping between past and present, between different perspectives to paint the full picture。 The only issue, I feel like the end of the book was both abrupt (the tone seemed to completely shift when it jumped into the pandemic) and really drawn out (once we get to the bottom of what happened, we don’t need every lose end tied up so perfectly, it was excessive)。Thanks Goodreads and Holt Publishing for the ARC。 Finally all of those giveaway entries finally paid off。 。。。more

WOW。 Just WOW。 I wasn’t ever a fan of Liane Moriarty。 In fact, I had read two of her previous novels and both ended up being DNF for me, despite the hype surrounding them。 But, Apples looked interesting and several fellow readers I follow had reviewed it, so I plunged it anyway。 When I got past the first couple of chapters - dread began to creep up。 They were too long, too descriptive - it would be like the others。 But then all of a sudden - it was like all the pieces clicked together and I coul WOW。 Just WOW。 I wasn’t ever a fan of Liane Moriarty。 In fact, I had read two of her previous novels and both ended up being DNF for me, despite the hype surrounding them。 But, Apples looked interesting and several fellow readers I follow had reviewed it, so I plunged it anyway。 When I got past the first couple of chapters - dread began to creep up。 They were too long, too descriptive - it would be like the others。 But then all of a sudden - it was like all the pieces clicked together and I couldn’t put the book down - finished it in two days。 The dynamics of family and siblings were one thing I loved。 Being an only child myself, it’s fascinating to read everyone else’s experience - fact or fiction。I am a big thriller reader - so I didn’t expect the ending at all。 I thought it would go a completely different direction。 But, again was pleasantly surprised。 Moriarty also took a simple sport - one many (including myself) know not much about, and center entire life lessons around it。 Bravo! Liane Moriarty is one the wittiest writers alive today, at least in my opinion。 There is no-one else whose novels I pick up knowing, with such satisfying confidence, I'm going to enjoy from beginning to end。 And this one doesn't disappoint。 Joy and Stan, childhood sweethearts grown old, have made a life out of tennis, initially playing and later coaching it, not just professionally but also to their alpha-type, larger-than-life children。 Now, in the supposed golden years of their retirement, sec Liane Moriarty is one the wittiest writers alive today, at least in my opinion。 There is no-one else whose novels I pick up knowing, with such satisfying confidence, I'm going to enjoy from beginning to end。 And this one doesn't disappoint。 Joy and Stan, childhood sweethearts grown old, have made a life out of tennis, initially playing and later coaching it, not just professionally but also to their alpha-type, larger-than-life children。 Now, in the supposed golden years of their retirement, secrets start tumbling from their closets。 A stranger arrives, initially full of sunshine and recipes for apple pie, but gradually souring what is left of their fragile peace。 Who is she, and what does she want? It’s family, mystery, drama, complex characters and relationships all in one。 It’s a slow burn, the author not revealing too much at once but kept me turning the pages。 The end got really interesting and I found myself reading for several hours- not able to put it down until I finished。 I love Liane Moriarty books and this was another hit for me。

Thank you to Netgalley for the ALC and the publisher for the ARC。 2。5 Oh man, I feel blasphemous saying so, but this was not my favorite。 The story follows Moriarty's Hansel and Gretel signature style by dispensing small bits of detail and drama to propel the reader forward towards the big reveal, but in this instance, the characters, setting and drama do little to make you want to turn the page。 I normally can't put Moriarty's books down, but this one I had to talk myself into picking it up。 Ov Thank you to Netgalley for the ALC and the publisher for the ARC。 2。5 Oh man, I feel blasphemous saying so, but this was not my favorite。 The story follows Moriarty's Hansel and Gretel signature style by dispensing small bits of detail and drama to propel the reader forward towards the big reveal, but in this instance, the characters, setting and drama do little to make you want to turn the page。 I normally can't put Moriarty's books down, but this one I had to talk myself into picking it up。 Overlong and over-boring。 Twist at the end was okay, but it takes a looong time to get there。 For Moriarty completists only。 。。。more

Liane Moriarty knows how to write to keep me on my toes。  I greatly appreciate this, since I grew up with cozy mysteries and can usually see “unexpected” plot twists coming。  "Apples Never Fall" kept me on my toes。  The book switches between the present and something that happened six months ago。  The two timelines interweave to hit their climaxes in close succession。  While this double narrative seems to be a typical ploy for Moriarty (see "Big Little Lies" and "Truly Madly Deeply"), it is effe Liane Moriarty knows how to write to keep me on my toes。  I greatly appreciate this, since I grew up with cozy mysteries and can usually see “unexpected” plot twists coming。  "Apples Never Fall" kept me on my toes。  The book switches between the present and something that happened six months ago。  The two timelines interweave to hit their climaxes in close succession。  While this double narrative seems to be a typical ploy for Moriarty (see "Big Little Lies" and "Truly Madly Deeply"), it is effective without seeming predictable。  I could go on about the well-crafted mystery, but what really stood out to me were the characters。The present timeline is narrated primarily through the perspective of side characters to the plot, most of whom will not appear again。  Yet even with their brief appearance, these characters are fully fleshed out。  Moriarty creates a world of individuals who are acting and thinking on their own behalf, not to drive forward a story。  The past timeline switches perspectives between the main characters (Joy, the soon-to-be-missing mother, and her four grown children)。  This glimpse and understanding of them from the past rounds out the interactions the side characters have with them in the present。  By the end of the book, the characters seem real enough to be able to call them up and ask what’s going on in their lives now。  My one slight disappointment was the final few chapters, post-climax。  I appreciate Moriarty writing a lengthy denouement as she gradually releases us from the world of the book, but the fall-out and dive, at last, into Stan’s perspective was stretched out a bit (perhaps only two chapters, rather than three)。  However, the final chapter came in hot and fast and has left me thinking and haunted。  Just the way an ending should。  As always, Liane Moriarty has left me hungry for more of this world。 。。。more
